Meknes: The Versailles of Morocco

The Giant's Legacy

Meknes was the capital of Morocco under Sultan Moulay Ismaïl in the 17th century. The Sultan aimed to build a city that would rival Versailles in grandeur, and he largely succeeded. The city is defined by its massive, 25-mile-long ramparts and its monumental gates. Because it is often overshadowed by nearby Fez, Meknes remains a more peaceful and authentic imperial city where you can truly feel the weight of history without the crowds.

Bab Mansour Monument

Bab Mansour: A Gate to History

Bab Mansour is widely considered one of the most beautiful gates in the world. Its intricate mosaic work, marble columns (pillaged from Volubilis), and massive wooden doors are a masterclass in Alouite architecture. The gate leads into the central Place el-Hedim, Meknes's answer to Marrakech's Jemaa el-Fna, but with a more localized, community feel. It's the perfect place to sit with a mint tea and watch the evening light hit the green tiles of the medina.

The Royal Granaries and Stables

The Heri es-Souani is an architectural marvel—a massive complex of granaries and stables that could house 12,000 royal horses. The thick walls and sophisticated system of underground water channels kept the building cool enough to store enormous quantities of grain. The nearby Agdal Basin, a massive man-made lake, was used to irrigate the Royal Gardens and serve as a reservoir for the city. These structures demonstrate the incredible engineering prowess of the 17th-century Moroccan empire.
